Before undergoing its modern renovations in 2012, the building had a long and storied history as the Bethany Mission for Colored People, a “Mission Sabbath School” of no denomination founded in 1869, and today its structure and function remain true to that history. Through his collection and the facilities restoration, Victor Keen’s purpose is to tell the story of its history and Bethany Mission Gallery is an homage to both the neighborhood’s rich educational past and to its future as a thriving arts space housing his personal acquisitions.
